The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom arrives on the Nintendo Switch as a deliberate return to top-down Zelda design, developed in collaboration between Nintendo and Grezzo and scheduled to launch Thursday, September 26.

Revealed as part of the thirteenth installment of Nintendo's Ask the Developer interview series, the project positions Princess Zelda as the playable lead and introduces a signature copy-and-paste mechanic built around the Tri Rod and reproducible "echo" objects.

Background and team

Grezzo, founded in 2006, has a long history of working on Zelda remakes for Nintendo, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (June 2011), Majora's Mask 3D (February 2015), and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (September 2019).

For Echoes of Wisdom, Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma partnered with Grezzo on an original, top-down entry rather than another remake.

Tomomi Sano served as Nintendo's director on the title; Ask the Developer notes she is the first female director in the Zelda series.

Satoshi Terada took on directorial duties at Grezzo after working as a designer on previous Zelda remakes.

Design goals and the 'echoes' mechanic

Nintendo explained that Aonuma wanted to establish a dedicated top-down Zelda line distinct from 3D entries such as Breath of the Wild, citing the different gameplay and spatial feel that a top-down perspective provides.

Grezzo initially prototyped an "edit dungeon" concept that let players copy objects from the field and assemble custom dungeons.

After internal pitches from across Grezzo's staff, the team pivoted to using copied items as in-world tools — dubbed "echoes" — that Zelda can create with the Tri Rod to solve puzzles, reach new heights, or enlist copied enemies to fight on her behalf.

From pitch to production

Nintendo said Grezzo opened the early development stage to pitches from a wide range of employees, not only planners but designers and programmers, producing dozens of proposals.

Grezzo recounted that the team spent days reviewing those pitches, which ultimately converged on two core ideas: copy-and-paste gameplay and the blend of top-down and side-view perspectives.

On technical challenges and creative payoff

Aonuma acknowledged concerns about memory use when allowing many copied objects, but he pushed the team to pursue the idea because of its gameplay potential.

Sano observed that Grezzo engineered single objects to function in both top-down and side views, enabling surprising interactions — for example, side-view hazards behaving as dropable obstacles in top-down space or serving as platforms when ridden.

Developers described that shifting perspective changes how players understand scale and movement, effectively doubling the ways mechanics can be used.

What this means for players

Echoes of Wisdom is positioned as a modern top-down Zelda built for the Nintendo Switch generation, emphasizing player freedom, emergent problem-solving, and inventive use of a single set of mechanics across multiple perspectives.

With Nintendo and Grezzo's track records on Zelda remakes and the creative experimentations described in Ask the Developer, Echoes of Wisdom represents a notable departure for the franchise and a technical challenge the teams say they met ahead of the September 26 launch.
