Square Enix has marked the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest by confirming the series has surpassed 100 million total shipments and digital sales, underlining four decades of influence across consoles and mobile devices.

The company released a short commemorative video featuring series creator Yuji Horii at his Armor Project studio to celebrate the milestone and reflect on the franchise’s legacy.

Dragon Quest debuted on the Famicom in 1986 and helped define modern Japanese role‑playing games.

Over the years the franchise has appeared on platforms ranging from the MSX and Super Famicom/SNES to handhelds such as the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, through home consoles including the Wii and Xbox One, and more recently on Nintendo Switch and mobile storefronts and PlayStation systems.

The series’ distinctive character art from Akira Toriyama and longtime composer Koichi Sugiyama have been central to the brand’s identity; Sugiyama passed away in 2021, a notable moment in the series’ history.

In the new video, Horii is shown leading the celebration at Armor Project; he gestures toward a commemorative cake and acknowledges the milestone with understated humor.

The creator closes the segment with a traditional, series‑appropriate benediction aimed at fans and future adventures, reinforcing the franchise’s longstanding tone and themes.

Looking ahead, Square Enix confirmed ongoing development on the next mainline entry, Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, a project that continues the series’ evolution on modern hardware.

The company also announced a spin‑off, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, scheduled to arrive on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch on December 3.

These releases will join an extensive catalog that has helped Dragon Quest remain a consistent presence in Nintendo Direct showcases, eShop listings, and platform launch windows over multiple console generations.

For industry observers and fans, the 100 million milestone is both a commercial achievement and a reminder of Dragon Quest’s persistent relevance.

As Square Enix advances development on new titles, the franchise’s cross‑generational footprint — from the Famicom to the Nintendo Switch and beyond — remains a defining chapter in the history of JRPGs.
