Description

Highest Score Arcade, a beloved British amusement arcade based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, is reopening its doors this weekend in a decisive attempt to secure its future after facing significant financial adversity.

The arcade, which first opened in August 2022, became a local fixture for retro gaming enthusiasts and families in the region.

Last month, Highest Score Arcade announced an abrupt closure, posting 'Game Over' messages across its social media accounts, leaving many in the Salisbury community to believe that the venue had shut down permanently. In a renewed effort to keep the beloved gaming hub active, arcade owner James Petherick confirmed via the arcade’s official Facebook page that Highest Score Arcade will reopen today (Friday, the 11th) and tomorrow (Saturday, the 12th).

Entry fees have been lowered to just £1, with visitors welcome to contribute more through optional donations.

Additionally, party bookings are being offered at a significant discount—50% off their regular price—with Petherick affirming that bookings will be honored even if the arcade faces permanent closure in the near future. Reflecting on the arcade’s journey, Petherick explained, “When we first opened, there was a tremendous amount of interest from the local community.

I invested heavily into improving the experience—bringing in new arcade machines, updating the lighting, and laying down new carpets.

My goal has always been to keep reinvesting in the business so it could continue serving Salisbury and Wiltshire.” However, Petherick acknowledged the mounting challenges in the past half-year, highlighting a significant decline in trade.

He cited a combination of factors affecting the arcade’s operational stability: “People simply don’t have as much disposable income right now.

Everyone is feeling the squeeze due to difficult financial times.

Despite efforts to keep pricing low and competitive, unavoidable cost increases and substantial expenses have pushed operations to their limits.

The arcade is truly in ‘survival mode’ at this point.” All funds raised during this critical reopening weekend will be directed exclusively towards operational costs, equipment maintenance, and further investments aimed at preserving the arcade in the upcoming weeks.

“This weekend is the last big effort to keep Highest Score Arcade open—not just for Salisbury and Wiltshire, but for the broader gaming community,” shared Petherick in his statement to supporters. The challenges facing Highest Score Arcade reflect a broader trend affecting independent gaming venues across the UK.

Freeplay Arcade, another popular destination located in Dorset, has also recently closed due to financial difficulties, though it has announced plans to relocate and reopen in a new venue soon. The future of Highest Score Arcade now rests in the hands of the local community and supporters, emphasizing the growing need for patronage and support for independent gaming arcades in the current economic climate.
