Thirty years later, the Street Fighter movie remains a topic of discussion among both gaming and cinema enthusiasts, marking its place as a notable entry in the history of video game films. Street Fighter (1994) featured an international cast, including Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile, Raul Julia in his final cinematic role as the villain M.

Bison, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and Kylie Minogue as Cammy.

With a budget of $35 million, the film garnered just under $100 million globally at the box office.

While it was financially successful relative to its budget, the movie was widely criticized by critics and fans for its script, tone, and deviations from the source material.

Despite the harsh feedback, the film found an enduring cult audience over the years. Director Steven E.

de Souza has previously spoken about the challenges during the film's production.

In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, he revealed that leading actor Jean-Claude Van Damme faced significant personal struggles at the time, which impacted the shoot's schedule and created logistical hurdles.

De Souza shared that much of the filming required flexibility and quick adaptation, with the crew often needing to reshuffle the script around Van Damme's frequent absences.

Nonetheless, the film was completed and released on schedule, and its legacy has only grown in the decades since. Despite its mixed reputation, Capcom acknowledged the Street Fighter movie’s ongoing role in the broader franchise.

The adaptation continues to generate revenue for Capcom’s licensing division, serving as a reminder of the brand’s global appeal.

Over the years, Street Fighter has seen several further adaptations, including 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li—a critical and commercial disappointment—and the 2014 release of Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, a web series turned film that received strong praise from dedicated fans for its authentic take on the game's lore. Looking ahead, Street Fighter’s cinematic journey continues, with Legendary Entertainment taking the helm of another theatrical adaptation.

The upcoming film is currently slated for release on March 20, 2026.

As the Street Fighter movie turns 30, its unusual history, memorable performances, and enduring popularity demonstrate the longevity and cultural impact of Capcom’s legendary fighting game series.
