Retroid, a well-established name in the handheld retro gaming community, is set to expand its catalog of portable game systems with a new Sega Mega Drive/Genesis-inspired variant of its popular Retroid Pocket Classic 6.
This comes after a strong showing of user interest on social media, with thousands of fans engaging with the company's recent Twitter/X posts teasing the new colorway.
The Retroid Pocket Classic 6, which currently ships in a standard grey finish with six buttons, is already a go-to choice for retro enthusiasts and competitive with other leading options in the handheld emulation market.
As of now, Retroid’s official website lists only the grey version, but the brand's interactive social media campaign could soon change that.
On Twitter/X, Retroid shared an official image showcasing what it's calling the Retroid Pocket Classic 6 SG – a Sega Genesis-themed model styled in homage to the 16-bit era’s iconic design.
The company wrote, “350 likes and we’ll make this Genesis themed Classic 6,” setting a modest benchmark.
The tweet quickly surpassed expectations, garnering over 1,000 likes within hours and sparking enthusiastic feedback from the retro handheld community.
Many respondents voiced their support and anticipation for the new variant, adding momentum behind Retroid's plans.
In a subsequent post, Retroid encouraged its fanbase to weigh in on aesthetic details, specifically whether the start button should be blue, reminiscent of early Sega Mega Drive controllers, or grey.
Notably, the company did not include red, a nod which some European fans may have hoped for based on regional controller colorways.
This transparent and fan-focused approach underscores Retroid's commitment to engaging directly with its user base, a hallmark strategy in building loyalty among retro gaming enthusiasts.
While an official release date has yet to be announced, current pricing indications suggest the upcoming color variant will match existing models, with the 64GB configuration retailing for $99.00 and the 128GB version at $129.00.
These prices continue to position the Retroid Pocket Classic 6 as an accessible alternative to larger platforms like the Nintendo Switch, especially for players focused on classic game emulation.
Stay tuned for further updates as Retroid moves this Sega Mega Drive/Genesis-themed Pocket Classic 6 closer to retail shelves.
With robust community support and a growing portfolio, Retroid continues to cement its place in the increasingly competitive retro handheld market.
