Created by programmer Lilliam, the project aims to bring mechanics and characters from modern re-releases back to the original 16-bit title while adding bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements and new content.
Sonic 3 Unlocked blends elements from Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins into the Mega Drive framework.
The demo introduces additional playable characters — including Amy Rose, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel — and implements an Encore-like mode familiar to players of Sonic Mania Plus.
That Encore Mode lets players control a rotating roster of characters and switch between them on the fly, applying the concept to the Sonic 3 design.
Lilliam explained the technical approach to adapting newer assets for the Mega Drive: they used sprites from Sonic Origins Plus and Sonic Mania as a baseline, then reduced the color palette and created original animations where necessary to match Mega Drive limitations.
The developer also credited artwork and musical elements taken from the original game and acknowledged contributors whose work appears in the mod.
Lilliam specifically cited inspiration and influence from community projects such as Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited.
Features confirmed for the demo and planned for the full release include:
- Playable characters drawn from modern Sonic releases, reworked for Mega Drive hardware
- An Encore-style remixed mode with character-switching
- Bug fixes, unlockables and quality-of-life options (including cutscene skips and new abilities)
- Promised additions in the final build such as original Special Stages, rebalanced monitors and a museum menu
Lilliam notes that the current demo is an early taste: alternate level palettes for Encore Mode were not completed in time for this release and will appear in the finished version.
The demo can be downloaded from the Sonic Hacking Contest submission page for those who wish to test the mod.
Context for modern players: Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins are available on contemporary platforms, including the Nintendo Switch eShop, and their assets and design philosophies continue to influence fan projects and ROM hacks centered on the original Mega Drive/Genesis titles.
Sonic 3 Unlocked represents one of the larger-scale efforts in the 2026 hacking contest to bridge classic hardware constraints with community-driven modern Sonic design.
