A new emulation project from developer Wanszai has made Sega Rally Championship — Sega’s influential 1995 Model 2 arcade racer — playable on modern Xbox consoles and PC with a range of contemporary enhancements.

The project, published on GitHub, targets Xbox Series X, Xbox 360 and Windows PC, and adds features aimed at improving fidelity and multiplayer for fans of the classic.

Sega Rally Championship first debuted in arcades in 1995 on Sega’s Model 2 hardware and received a PC release in 1997.

The new Wanszai framework follows the developer’s recent work on Virtua Racing emulation, and intends to make Sega Rally straightforward to run on modern systems while adding quality-of-life and compatibility enhancements.

Key features

- HD and UHD scaling for higher-resolution displays

- Toggleable 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 aspect ratios

- CRT filter options for a vintage look

- Custom soundtrack support (users must supply their own files)

- Support for controllers and force-feedback wheels

- System Link and online multiplayer for up to four players cross-platform

In journalistic terms, Wanszai has framed the aim of the project as reducing the technical friction required to play Sega Rally on contemporary hardware, delivering ‘an accessible, modernized experience’ for players who own the original game data.

The developer’s prior releases for Virtua Racing introduced similar enhancements — such as smoother frame rates and widescreen support — establishing a pattern of modern-friendly emulation work.

Availability and legal notes

The mod and tools are available now on GitHub.

As with other ROM-based emulation projects, users are required to supply legally obtained copies of Sega Rally’s ROM and soundtrack files; the GitHub distribution does not include those assets.

Context for players and preservationists

For preservation-minded players and competitive communities, the inclusion of System Link and online play is notable: it enables multiplayer sessions across supported platforms without relying on original arcade hardware.

Wheel and force-feedback support also bring the title closer to its original driving feel when used with compatible input devices.

While this project currently targets PC and Microsoft consoles, the mod’s release exemplifies an ongoing community effort to update and preserve arcade-era racing titles for modern platforms.

For players tracking releases and developer updates, GitHub remains the primary download and information source for Wanszai’s work.
