Flashback: The Quest for Identity, the legendary cinematic platform adventure from Delphine Software, has made another leap across platforms thanks to the dedicated efforts of French modder VBT.
Building on the game's legacy, VBT has successfully ported the Macintosh CD version of Flashback straight to the Sega Saturn, utilizing the open-source Reminiscence engine.
This remarkable port stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic games and the commitment of the homebrew community.
Originally released by Delphine Software in 1992 for the Commodore Amiga, Flashback: The Quest for Identity quickly became renowned for its smooth, rotoscoped animations and immersive storytelling.
The game's unique blend of platforming elements and cinematic cutscenes set a new standard for adventure games at the time, drawing comparisons to Another World, another acclaimed title by Delphine (launched in 1991).
Following its debut, Flashback saw widespread success and was ported to numerous platforms in 1993, including the NEC PC-9801, SNES, Sega CD, FM Towns, 3DO, CD-i, Atari Jaguar, and more.
VBT’s project began by leveraging the Macintosh CD version as a foundation, incorporating the Reminiscence engine to enable smooth gameplay on Sega’s 32-bit Saturn hardware.
As first reported by Sega Saturn Shiro, VBT publicly reached out to the homebrew community earlier this year, inviting interested players to download and test the early build of the port.
According to VBT, community feedback has played a critical role in refining the project—each round of input has been met with adjustments and bug fixes.
VBT stated that should the most recent build prove stable and free of major errors, the port will move forward toward a general release.
Those eager to experience this new iteration can obtain the port through SegaXtreme, the community site for Saturn homebrew and fan projects.
This release further expands Flashback’s impressive platform history—what began as an Amiga title inspired by the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive now celebrates a new era on the Sega Saturn, illustrating both the versatility of Delphine Software’s 1992 original and the passion of the retro gaming scene.
Flashback’s legacy only continues to grow.
Notably, its sequel, Fade to Black, arrived on the PlayStation in 1995.
Most recently, Flashback 2 launched in 2023, serving as a prequel and carrying forward the series’ tradition of innovative gameplay and rich storytelling.
With this new Sega Saturn port, a fresh generation of players—and longtime fans—have yet another opportunity to explore Flashback’s iconic world.
