Description

ZUIKI, the Japanese company acclaimed for its high-quality recreations of retro hardware, has officially announced its next step in reviving the iconic Sharp X68000 line.

Building on the success of the original X68000 Z—first unveiled in October 2022—ZUIKI is introducing two new models: the X68000 Z Super and X68000 Z XVI.

These new machines represent a significant upgrade for enthusiasts of vintage Japanese computing and gaming, and they are scheduled to launch through the Japanese crowdfunding platform Kibidango in Fall 2025. The original X68000 Z was conceived as a meticulously crafted miniature homage to Sharp's celebrated X68000 computer, which initially launched in 1987 and became renowned for its powerful hardware and robust library of games.

ZUIKI's first foray into the series debuted exclusively to backers on Kibidango, later enjoying a broader release with the X68000 Z Black Model in September 2023.

The console was noted for its faithful reproduction and attention to detail, with reviewers praising its authenticity while recognizing its complexity compared to mainstream mini-consoles. Now, ZUIKI lifts the lid on fresh iterations of its flagship machine.

The X68000 Z Super, closely resembling its predecessor in terms of system-on-chip (SoC) and memory, boasts a slightly larger footprint—measuring 227mm wide, 96mm high, and 169mm deep.

New functional upgrades include integrated Wi-Fi communication, additional SCSI and MIDI ports, and expanded D-Sub connectivity.

Furthermore, the unit can be equipped with a Nano-ITX motherboard, allowing users to dual-boot with Windows, opening further versatility for developers and retro enthusiasts alike. Meanwhile, the X68000 Z XVI advances the line further with a new SoC and increased memory, integrating all enhancements introduced by the Super model.

This advanced version is designed to cater to both collectors and users seeking maximum performance and feature-rich emulation of the original Sharp X68000 experience. According to ZUIKI, pre-orders for both devices will run on Kibidango from February 8 to February 27, 2025.

Pricing begins at 59,800 yen for the X68000 Z Super.

Several packages are available: customers can opt for a Super model with a custom XVI kit for 74,800 yen, perform their own faceplate and board swaps, or purchase two-unit and premium collector’s sets, with the top-tier offering reaching 680,000 yen.

For now, the release is strictly limited to crowdfunding backers, with no plans for a wider retail launch announced by ZUIKI. A recent teaser video shared on ZUIKI’s new X68000 Z Twitter/X account gave fans a closer look at the upcoming models, confirming additional connectivity options such as SCSI, MIDI IN/OUT/Thru, and support for existing joystick accessories.

The teaser also alluded to customizable faceplates bearing the X68000 Super and XVI logos, underscoring the level of authenticity and personalization built into the new systems. With a launch window targeted for Fall 2025, ZUIKI’s announcements mark a major milestone for retro computing fans eager to relive—or discover—the sharp performance and distinctive library of the original X68000.

As the company stated, further details will be unveiled during the upcoming Z-Club live stream on February 6, 2025.

For now, the X68000 Z Super and X68000 Z XVI not only celebrate Sharp’s computing legacy but also solidify ZUIKI’s reputation for delivering uncompromising, collector-grade hardware in the retro gaming landscape.
