The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask has reached a significant preservation milestone as ZeldaRET, the dedicated development group behind several Nintendo 64 game decompilations, announced the project has achieved 100% code decompilation matching for the US version.
This accomplishment puts Majora's Mask alongside other classic N64 titles such as Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark, and Banjo-Kazooie, all of which have been previously decompiled, aiding fan efforts to preserve and enhance these games for modern platforms.
Work on decompiling Majora's Mask began in March 2021, and after more than three and a half years of meticulous reverse engineering, the output now matches the original ROM source line-for-line.
The project paves the way for community-built PC ports, modding, and various enhancement projects that leverage the original game's code, much like previous efforts in the Nintendo preservation community, including initiatives like Zelda 64 Recompiled.
In a statement shared on Discord and relayed via GBATemp, the project lead explained, “With the integration of the final boss, Majora, our work has resulted in 100% decompiled code for the US version of Majora’s Mask.
While this is a major achievement, the entirety of our task is ongoing.
Similar to our efforts with Ocarina of Time, additional regional versions and overall code documentation remain, and we look forward to helping other Nintendo 64 games reach this milestone.”
It is important to emphasize that this decompilation applies specifically to the Nintendo 64 versions of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask—including various regional editions and version 1.1 revisions—but does not include the Nintendo 3DS remake.
This 100% match for the US Version 1.0 cartridge is a remarkable technical feat, ensuring that fans, preservationists, and modders have the most accurate base for future projects.
Access to the full source is available through ZeldaRET's GitHub repository, continuing the group’s commitment to open, community-driven preservation of classic video games.
The continued progress in game decompilation highlights the vibrant passion within the gaming community for preserving, understanding, and expanding upon Nintendo's iconic legacy.
As further regional and code base cleanups proceed, anticipation grows for the creative modding and PC porting possibilities now unlocked for one of Nintendo’s most atmospheric and beloved adventure games.
