Miyamoto explained that Yoshi has been integral to Mario adventures for over 30 years, originating from the development of Super Mario World.

He recounted that Yoshi was conceived from an idea to have Mario traverse levels atop a small dinosaur, with Koji Kondo incorporating fresh percussion to the soundtrack.

Miyamoto noted Yoshi's enduring appeal, stating, "Yoshi, who became iconic for running, jumping, eating, and laying eggs, first appeared in Super Mario World.

With Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, the character protected Baby Mario and introduced the mechanic of throwing eggs.

Over the years, Yoshi has continued to play a prominent role across 3D and 2D games.

For the movie, we've worked closely with Illumination’s artists to authentically bring Yoshi to the big screen." Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, provided a progress update on the animated film, stating that animation is now fully completed, with the movie having entered post-production.

Meledandri noted, "Our teams are now refining sound design and music, which will guide audiences on this galactic journey." He highlighted the collaborative efforts of directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, composer Brian Tyler, and the world-renowned Skywalker Sound.

Brian Tyler is recording the film’s score with a 70-piece orchestra, incorporating classic themes from the Super Mario Galaxy series. The partnership between Nintendo and Illumination previously led to the massive success of The Super Mario Bros.

Movie, which set box office records and became one of the highest-grossing animated features of all time.

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the companies aim to elevate the franchise to new cinematic heights, leveraging rich musical heritage and creative storytelling. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will debut in theaters worldwide starting April 1, 2026.
