Gears of War: Reloaded Heads to PlayStation 5 and Xbox, With Eyes on Nintendo Switch 2

In a significant move illustrating Xbox's expanding commitment to multi-platform game development, Microsoft has officially announced that Gears of War: Reloaded, a remastered edition of the fan-favorite franchise, will release on PlayStation 5, in addition to Xbox and PC.

This marks the first time a core title in the Gears of War series has been made available outside Microsoft's own ecosystem, underlining a new era for first-party IP distribution. The highly-anticipated Gears of War: Reloaded will offer updated visuals, modernized gameplay mechanics, and all content from previous releases.

In recent months, Xbox has published high-profile exclusives such as Sea of Thieves and Pentiment on platforms like Nintendo Switch and PlayStation, signaling a deliberate shift in strategy. This expansion was foreshadowed by Tom Warren, senior editor at The Verge, who in March reported that Xbox would be extending its cross-platform approach into 2025.

Warren noted that “a lot more titles are expected not only on the PlayStation 5 but also on the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2.” The strategy reflects Microsoft's broader ambition to reach gamers wherever they play, moving past traditional platform exclusivity. Further supporting this pivot, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, in an April statement, emphasized that Nintendo continues to be a significant partner for Xbox.

Spencer reaffirmed the importance of this relationship, saying that Nintendo’s ongoing collaboration is “an important part” of Xbox’s plans for the future.

This acknowledgment underscores the possibility of seeing more Xbox titles announced for Nintendo platforms, including the much-rumored Nintendo Switch 2, expected to drive the next wave of innovation in hybrid gaming hardware. The announcement of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5 follows speculation and industry reports about the potential for more longstanding Xbox franchises, such as Halo, to be published on multiple systems.
