After Microsoft's recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard and King, industry eyes are now fixed on the future of flagship franchises like Call of Duty, particularly their availability and experience across all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
As one of the world’s most successful shooter series, Call of Duty has historically seen fragmented content launches, with certain platforms receiving exclusive items and early access—practices that often divided the player community.
During a recent appearance on the Official Xbox Podcast, Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, addressed these concerns directly in light of the new publishing structure.
Spencer assured audiences that Microsoft’s objective is full inclusion for all Call of Duty fans, explicitly stating the company intends to offer "100% parity across all platforms as much as we can for launch and content." He acknowledged technical disparities may exist, such as resolution and frame rate differences based on the unique capabilities of hardware like the Nintendo Switch compared to rival consoles.
Still, Spencer clarified, "We are not aiming to use Call of Duty as a lever to shift gamers to Xbox consoles.
Our focus is on making every player feel equally valued, regardless of their device."
This approach signals a notable shift from previous arrangements, in which exclusive content were often timed or locked to select consoles.
Reflecting on this history, Spencer noted that such exclusivity has not served the broader Call of Duty community or the game itself.
He commented, "Xbox has previously been on the receiving end of delayed betas and missing out on content.
I don't think practices like these help the community or the longevity of the game.
If you're a Nintendo player, or on any other platform, you should feel like a full member of the Call of Duty Nation."
The inclusion of Nintendo platforms in these parity discussions follows official confirmation from Microsoft that future Call of Duty titles will appear on the Nintendo Switch and future Nintendo hardware.
While technical limitations of the Switch may affect certain visual or performance aspects, fans can now look forward to simultaneous launches and unified content updates, matching their peers on Xbox and PlayStation.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard—completed in October 2023—marks a major milestone in the gaming industry, uniting iconic properties under the Xbox Game Studios brand and promising expanded multiplatform support.
The move aligns with the company's broader strategy to grow engagement across diverse devices, offering players on Nintendo Switch access to one of gaming’s most influential franchises without compromise in launch timing or core content.
With Call of Duty set to reach an even wider audience through upcoming Nintendo Switch releases, Spencer’s assurances guarantee that all players, regardless of their platform of choice, will stand on equal footing for the first time in the franchise’s modern era.
