Clock Tower, the chilling Super Famicom horror adventure from Human Entertainment, is experiencing a renaissance three decades after its initial release.
Thanks to a passionate community of enthusiasts, a fan-developed version of Clock Tower has arrived on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, creating a novel way for horror game aficionados to revisit the genre-defining title.
Originally released exclusively for the Super Famicom in Japan on September 14, 1995, Clock Tower follows Jennifer Simpson, a vulnerable orphan who battles to survive against the menacing Scissorman.
The game's atmospheric storytelling and point-and-click mechanics have earned it a lasting legacy, acclaimed for setting new standards within horror gaming.
Over the years, Clock Tower has seen re-releases on various platforms, including enhanced editions for PlayStation, PC, and WonderSwan during the late 1990s.
More recently, Limited Run Games published the officially licensed Clock Tower: Rewind, bringing the classic to new audiences on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
Despite these numerous ports, the Game Boy Advance never received an official version.
Human Entertainment, the original developer, was forced to close its doors in 2000, a year before Nintendo’s popular handheld launched across global markets.
The resulting gap was filled by the inventive efforts of the fan community, who have meticulously crafted a faithful Game Boy Advance adaptation based on the celebrated Super Famicom release and the well-regarded English fan translation from Aeon Genesis.
The new Game Boy Advance edition was posted earlier this month by Clock Tower enthusiast and ROM hacker BobSchneeder45 on ROM Hack Plaza to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the game’s Japanese debut.
This grassroots project also credits contributors such as Blamerobots (soundtrack conversion), SuperDave (soundtrack assistance), Diario (English manual, updated title graphics, physical mockups), and MB (Japanese manual), underscoring the collaborative nature of the fan development community.
This fan-made version offers both Japanese and English language options, enhancing its accessibility and broadening its appeal to an international audience.
Its arrival not only strengthens Clock Tower’s enduring cult status but also serves as a perfect lead-in to the Halloween season for horror fans on the go.
As one of the most influential horror games in Nintendo history now finds new life on the Game Boy Advance, the enduring impact of Human Entertainment’s creation continues to resonate on both official and unofficial platforms.
