Super Mario Land 1 + ½ Demo Reimagines Super Mario Land’s Opening Level for Game Boy Color

A fan-made demo titled Super Mario Land 1 + ½ rebuilds the opening level of Nintendo’s 1989 Game Boy platformer Super Mario Land with the visual and mechanical sensibilities of its 1992 sequel, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

The short, single-level proof-of-concept was created by artist 2BitCrook with programming contributions from TeachEric and Shin and music by Beatscribe.

The project was developed in GB Studio and uses Mico27’s Metatile Plugin to extend the engine’s tile and layout capabilities.

Background and technical approach

Super Mario Land, released in 1989 for the original Game Boy, is often noted for its distinct soundtrack by Hirokazu “Chip” Tanaka and departure from the Mushroom Kingdom setting common to earlier Mario titles.

Its sequel, Super Mario Land 2, arrived in 1992 with more advanced visuals and larger sprites that took fuller advantage of Game Boy hardware maturity.

Super Mario Land 1 + ½ aims to ask the concrete question: what would the 1989 title have looked like if its creators had the experience and techniques used in 1992?

According to the project’s public notes, the demo respects original Game Boy sprite and background limits while running in Game Boy Color mode to take advantage of the system’s doubled CPU and color palette when possible.

The team describes the build as a one-level demo intended to showcase larger, more expressive sprites for Mario, Princess Daisy, and enemies such as Goombos and Bombshell Koopas, echoing the aesthetic of Super Mario Land 2.

Scope, availability, and distribution

The creator framed the release as a proof-of-concept and indicated that the original plan had been to recreate the entire first world before other projects intervened.

Because the build uses Nintendo intellectual property, the demo is distributed for free on itch.io for use on Game Boy Color hardware and Game Boy emulators; the developers emphasize that the project is not a commercial release and warn that anyone charging money for this demo is not acting with the team’s authorization.

What this means for fans and preservation

Super Mario Land 1 + ½ is a compact tribute that highlights both the limitations and the creative possibilities of Game Boy-era design.

It’s a demonstration of how modern fan tools like GB Studio and community plugins can be used to reimagine classic handheld titles while remaining outside official platforms such as the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Switch releases.

Enthusiasts can download and try the demo via its itch.io page.
