Ultimate Unveils Dragon Quest 'Hero' DLC Fighter in Detailed Nintendo Direct
Nintendo Switch owners and Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate fans have much to celebrate following the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, helmed by series director Masahiro Sakurai.
The comprehensive broadcast provided an in-depth look at the highly anticipated DLC fighter known as 'Hero,' a beloved protagonist from the Dragon Quest franchise.
This new addition continues Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate’s tradition of honoring legendary gaming icons and further expands the roster for one of Nintendo’s best-selling titles, available via the eShop.
Celebrating Dragon Quest’s Legacy with the Hero
The presentation confirmed that 'Hero' is not just a single character but is represented by four iconic protagonists drawn from across the Dragon Quest series.
Players can select between Eleven from Dragon Quest XI, Arusu (also known as Erdrick) from Dragon Quest III, Solo from Dragon Quest IV, and Eight from Dragon Quest VIII.
This multi-faceted approach reflects the deep history of the Dragon Quest franchise, a cornerstone of roleplaying games from Square Enix.
Enhanced Combat and New Features
Director Masahiro Sakurai highlighted several key gameplay mechanics during the Nintendo Direct.
Notably, the Hero is capable of delivering Critical Hits as part of his Smash attacks, staying true to the signature mechanics of the Dragon Quest series.
In addition, Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate will introduce eight music tracks drawn directly from Dragon Quest’s celebrated soundtracks, further immersing players in the franchise’s atmosphere.
To complement the Hero’s arrival, a special Dragon Quest-themed Spirit Board will be added, offering players new challenges and collectibles.
Mii Costume options have also been expanded, including outfits inspired by Veronica from Dragon Quest XI, the iconic Slime Hat, Erdrick's armor, and the classic Monk attire from Dragon Quest III.

Beyond new character content, Nintendo announced multiple quality-of-life improvements for Super Smash Bros.

The Final Smash Meter will now feature a time limit, adding a new layer of strategy to matches.
In Adventure Mode: World of Light, a 'Very Easy' difficulty option is being introduced, making the content more accessible to a wider range of players.
For the game’s online community, updates have streamlined Spectator Mode: fans can now earn points by accurately predicting match winners, which can then be redeemed for in-game items.
Furthermore, Online Tourneys are being added, with recurring Special Event tournaments scheduled for the future, enhancing the online competitive scene on Nintendo Switch.

Since its debut in December 2018, Super Smash Bros.
Ultimate has become the best-selling fighting game in history, crossing over 30 million units sold globally as of 2023.
