Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance—The Story Behind Jason Charles Miller and the 'Rules of Nature' Meme
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Konami, remains one of the most unique and exhilarating entries in the Metal Gear series.
Originally released in 2013, this action-packed title brought a fresh, frenetic energy to the franchise.
Featuring adrenaline-pumping combat, over-the-top boss battles, and a renowned soundtrack, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance earned acclaim from both fans and critics, becoming a staple on platforms such as the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, while generating continued interest around possible ports, including calls for a Nintendo Switch release.
A stand-out feature of the game is its eclectic soundtrack, which fuses powerful rock elements with electronic motifs.
Two of the key tracks, 'Rules of Nature' and 'Red Sun,' are especially memorable—thanks in large part to the dynamic vocals of Jason Charles Miller.
Miller, best known as the frontman of Godhead and for his contributions to major franchises like Final Fantasy, lent his voice to the high-octane soundscape of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, helping to drive the action sequences to their now-iconic status.
Unexpectedly, 'Rules of Nature' cultivated a cult following beyond the game itself.
The track inspired the viral 'Rules of Nature Goes With Everything' meme, where fans paired its explosive chorus with unrelated (and often humorous) video clips across the internet.
However, Miller, the voice behind the anthem, was initially unaware of this phenomenon.
In a conversation with PC Gamer, Miller clarified that he was not immediately aware of the meme’s popularity because he was not credited as the vocalist at the game’s launch.
He explained, "I completely missed out on the meme's rise.
With no credits attached to my name for this song at first, I didn't even know about 'Rules of Nature Goes With Everything' until two years after it started trending."
It was only when Konami re-released the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance soundtrack on Spotify—with Miller appropriately credited—that the story changed.
Miller noted that, with his name newly associated as the original singer, fans finally pointed out the song’s impact in the gaming community and the long-running meme.
Reflecting on this missed opportunity for real-time participation, Miller remarked that while he found it "frustrating" to have missed being part of the meme as it happened, he was at least able to enjoy reviewing its legacy in retrospect.
Beyond his work on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Miller has built an impressive portfolio as a voice actor in both video games and animation, contributing to hits like World of Warcraft, Wonder Woman, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Hellsing, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
His multifaceted career cements his reputation as a versatile and prolific figure across the entertainment industry.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance continues to enjoy a passionate fanbase and strong soundtrack sales, with the enduring popularity of 'Rules of Nature' exemplifying its lasting influence.
The story of Jason Charles Miller serves as a reminder of the many unsung talents behind gaming’s most iconic moments—and the sometimes unpredictable journey of recognition in the modern digital era.
