Nintendo has raised the bar for first-party visuals with the release of a new graphics update for Super Mario Odyssey, allowing the acclaimed platformer to shine on the latest Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
Launched in 2017 by Nintendo, Super Mario Odyssey quickly became a flagship Nintendo Switch title, renowned for its innovative gameplay, expansive worlds, and dazzling visual presentation.
Now, thanks to the advancements introduced by the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario’s globe-trotting adventure looks better than ever.
A recently published graphics comparison video highlights the remarkable differences between Super Mario Odyssey running on the original Nintendo Switch and its new iteration on the Nintendo Switch 2.
On the original hardware, Super Mario Odyssey was limited to a 900p resolution in docked mode, a technical constraint that balanced visual fidelity with stable performance.
In contrast, the Nintendo Switch 2 version outputs at a much sharper 2160p (upscaled from a native 1440p), leveraging the increased power of Nintendo’s latest console to deliver crisper, clearer, and more vivid imagery.
According to the developers at Nintendo, the improved resolution is made possible by the upgraded GPU and faster memory architecture found in the Switch 2.
This allows iconic locations such as New Donk City and the Sand Kingdom to be rendered with heightened detail and vibrancy, creating a more immersive experience for both newcomers and dedicated fans of Mario’s journey.
The company highlights that these enhancements maintain the smooth gameplay and responsive controls that the original release was praised for, while pushing the visual presentation closer to modern 4K standards.
The free update for Super Mario Odyssey is now available for download via the Nintendo eShop, offering players who upgrade to Nintendo Switch 2 an immediate and substantial graphical improvement.
This move echoes Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to supporting its legacy titles with meaningful new features, ensuring their lasting relevance alongside the evolving hardware landscape.
Since its initial launch, Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, solidifying its place as one of the best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch platform.
The newly released update not only underscores the enduring popularity of the title but also showcases Nintendo’s prowess in leveraging hardware advancements to breathe fresh life into acclaimed games from its catalog.
