Square Enix has officially announced the upcoming release of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, set to launch on both the Nintendo Switch and the recently unveiled Switch 2 in February 2025.
The news arrived during Sony's State of Play broadcast, where developer representatives debuted a new trailer highlighting the enriched journey awaiting longtime Dragon Quest fans and newcomers alike.
Dragon Quest VII, originally released on the PlayStation in 2000 and later remade for the Nintendo 3DS, holds a treasured place in the JRPG universe.
With Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, Square Enix is bringing this timeless adventure to current hardware with meaningful improvements and expanded gameplay elements.
A central reveal from the latest trailer is the much-anticipated return of the character Kiefer, now appearing as an adult.
The footage provided fans a preview of the reunion, as players will once again team up with Kiefer during a pivotal segment set in the Rucker region of the past.
In a statement provided by Square Enix, the publisher explained that while the game preserves core elements from the original, 'Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined offers streamlined progression, deeper character growth, and brand new storylines.' Kiefer, after years of absence, has significantly honed his abilities and will be a pivotal ally in stealth and battle scenarios—especially as players attempt to infiltrate Rucker Castle with their party under cover of night.
In addition to refreshed character arcs and narrative content, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined introduces new exploration mechanics centered around the collection of fragments from broken stone tablets.
Players must find, assemble, and correctly place these fragments on color-matched pedestals at the Shrine of Mysteries—the party’s central hub located on their home island.
Each completed tablet activates a new portal, unveiling previously unseen locations filled with unique challenges and world-altering quests.
As described by Square Enix, aiding the inhabitants of these new regions will dynamically transform the world map, resulting in new islands emerging as players progress.
Square Enix has also emphasized thoughtfully modernized progression and expanded locations in this reimagined edition, targeted at both series veterans and those experiencing Dragon Quest VII’s narrative for the first time.
With Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, fans can look forward to a revitalized adventure launching digitally via the Nintendo eShop and on physical cartridges, promising enhanced content for both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2’s expanded audience.
This re-release represents a commitment by Square Enix to honor and expand one of its most acclaimed franchises.
