Velan Studios Confirms Development of Star Fox Remake for Nintendo Switch 2

Velan Studios has publicly confirmed it is the developer responsible for the upcoming Star Fox remake launching on Nintendo Switch 2 on 25 June 2026.

The studio behind Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Knockout City is partnering with Nintendo to bring a modern, cinematic reimagining of the Nintendo 64 classic to the Switch successor, with retail and digital releases planned on the Nintendo eShop worldwide.

Velan described the project as a long-standing passion for the team, saying they have dedicated extensive development time to delivering Star Fox for the new hardware.

The studio framed the collaboration with Nintendo as an honor and emphasized its commitment to honoring the original while leveraging modern technology available on Nintendo Switch 2.

Technical details from Velan confirm the game was built using the studio's in-house VIPER engine.

Velan stated that VIPER enabled higher visual fidelity, stable 60 frames per second gameplay, and fully real-time rendered cutscenes, allowing the remake to present both gameplay and cinematics at modern production standards.

Nintendo has positioned the remake as a cinematic take on Star Fox 64, promising overhauled character designs, refreshed stage visuals, detailed cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue, and a sweeping orchestral soundtrack.

Those design notes come directly from Nintendo's description of the project and frame the remake as a faithful but modernized retelling of the original adventure across the Lylat System.

In our hands-on preview last month, the game was praised for its audiovisual overhaul and faithful gameplay foundation.

The preview concluded that the remake represents the best-looking, best-sounding, and most refined play experience the franchise has seen to date, while remaining true to core mechanics fans expect from Star Fox 64.

With a confirmed release date of 25 June 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, the Velan-developed Star Fox remake will be among the early major third-party projects available on the platform via both brick-and-mortar retail and the Nintendo eShop.

Velan's experience with location-aware and network-driven titles positions the studio as a notable partner for Nintendo on this high-profile revival of a classic IP.
