Vanillaware's cult classic Muramasa is coming back.
Announced during a packed Nintendo Direct, Muramasa: Revenant Blades is a comprehensive overhaul of the studio's 2D action RPG originally released as Muramasa: The Demon Blade on Wii in 2009 and previously remastered for PlayStation Vita as Muramasa Rebirth in 2013.
The upcoming release is slated for "Early 2027" on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo's next-generation Switch hardware, and is positioned as the definitive version of the title.
According to publisher Marvelous, Revenant Blades consolidates content added in the Vita remaster while introducing new technical and gameplay enhancements.
Vanillaware's leadership had earlier cited development challenges that made further ports difficult; the company now says those hurdles have been resolved, enabling this new edition.
Marvelous' briefing describes a new localization that includes English voiceover, and confirms that all six character storylines — originally expanded in the Vita release — will be available from the start.
The publisher also lists modern upgrades: support for up to 4K resolution on compatible hardware, updated combat and weapon systems, additional modes, and expanded gameplay options to present the game's Edo-period-inspired world with greater clarity.
Gameplay details in the announcement emphasize refined side-scrolling hack-and-slash action with updated controls, more than 100 swords available for forging, and dozens of skills to upgrade and customize.
The remaster promises new modes and variable playstyles so players can experience the game's hand-drawn art and animations from fresh perspectives.
Vanillaware has built a reputation for high-quality 2D production values; more recent studio releases include 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (2019–2020) and Unicorn Overlord (2024).
Those titles helped establish the developer's modern pedigree and reinforced interest in bringing classic catalog entries to current platforms.
Marvelous has listed physical editions: a Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch and PS5 priced at €49.99/£44.99, and a Deluxe Edition at €69.99/£59.99 that includes an artbook of Vanillaware artwork.
Physical pre-orders are expected to be announced in due course.
Muramasa: Revenant Blades aims to be the most complete edition of Vanillaware's beloved action RPG, combining legacy content with modern presentation and quality-of-life improvements.
Watch for further details, release-date firming, and storefront listings on Nintendo eShop as Early 2027 approaches.
