City Connection, a renowned Japanese game developer and publisher, has officially cancelled the Xbox One release of its highly anticipated Saturn Tribute collection featuring the classic titles Steam Heart’s and Advanced Variable Geo.
The announcement comes just months after the collection was revealed, disappointing fans who were eagerly looking forward to playing these updated Sega Saturn gems on Microsoft's home console.
Steam Heart’s & Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute was originally announced in January, capturing attention with its promise to bring together two cult classics: the 1997 Sega Saturn fighter Advanced Variable Geo and the 1998 vertical shooter Steam Heart’s.
Both games share a legacy dating back to their origins on the PC-98 platform and have gained notoriety over the years, particularly for their controversial and erotic content.
While the Saturn versions are generally regarded as less explicit than the original releases, they apparently did not meet Microsoft's content guidelines.
In an official statement shared via social media and translated by Gematsu, City Connection attributed the cancellation to Microsoft's request for 'significant changes' to the game’s content.
The developer emphasized that it sought to 'provide a consistent gameplay experience across all platforms,' and modifying only the Xbox version would have compromised this goal.
City Connection described the decision as a difficult but necessary choice, and extended its apologies to Xbox fans anticipating the collection.
The company reaffirmed its dedication to releasing titles on Xbox platforms in the future, indicating this move is not indicative of a broader strategy.
The Saturn Tribute collection remains on track for launch on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
The release is scheduled for May 29th, 2024, in Japan, with no announcements regarding a Western release at this time.
From the perspective of preservation and accessibility, the continued availability across other major gaming platforms will allow both longtime fans and new players to revisit or discover these unique titles.
City Connection's efforts in remastering and re-releasing retro games like Steam Heart’s and Advanced Variable Geo exemplify the enduring interest in the Sega Saturn's library.
While the Xbox community will miss out on this collection for now, PlayStation, Switch, and PC players can still look forward to experiencing these cult classics in a modern format via the eShop, PlayStation Store, and Steam.
As the release date approaches, City Connection’s decision underscores the importance of consistent content policies, platform moderation, and developer integrity within the evolving landscape of digital game distribution.
