The update has drawn attention from developers and platform holders because it aims to balance global illumination quality with runtime performance — a balance that has particular relevance for handheld consoles such as the widely discussed Nintendo Switch 2.
In its preview notes, Epic explains that the new Lumen path provides medium-quality global illumination by using irradiance fields with probe occlusion. The company states this mode runs roughly twice as fast as Lumen's high-quality setting while preserving artistic direction for games that depend on global illumination. Epic positions this medium path as the new default for current-generation handheld consoles, noting it can be used to target 60 frames per second and is also supported on PC. Lumen high-quality settings continue to aim for 60 fps on PlayStation 5 hardware, according to the preview.
Unreal Engine 5 has faced scrutiny over performance on multiple platforms since its launch, and outlets such as Digital Foundry have previously reported that several Switch-era and early Switch 2-targeted projects do not make use of Lumen or Nanite. While Epic's preview does not single out Nintendo Switch 2 by name, console makers and studios targeting a handheld 60 fps experience stand to benefit from any engine-level advances that lower the cost of global illumination and accelerate runtime performance.
