Koei Tecmo and Omega Force are bringing their classic PS2-era hack-and-slash title back to modern consoles with Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, launching worldwide for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1, 2026.
The remaster arrives amid ongoing interest from longtime series fans and follows the franchise's 25th anniversary, which helped accelerate the project's development.
In an interview with Nintendo Everything, producer Tomohiko Sho explained why the studio classifies the project as a remaster rather than a remake.
Sho said the team's goal was to recreate the original game at a modern level of quality and style without rebuilding it from scratch.
While the development process added new features and scenarios, the core intention remained to preserve the original experience and offer modern options for players.
Sho described the technical and design challenges the team faced.
The most significant issue was increasing the number of soldiers rendered on screen, which affected gameplay balance and required careful adjustment of both distant soldier behavior and overall combat tuning.
He noted that much of the original development environment and data for the PS2 title were not fully preserved, making faithful replication harder than initially expected.
The team originally planned a release on the original Nintendo Switch but canceled that version after determining the hardware could not meet the desired quality for the remaster.
For Nintendo Switch 2, Koei Tecmo confirmed the game targets a variable frame rate between 30 and 60 FPS to match the experience on other platforms.
Resolution targets are 2560×1440 in TV Mode and 1920×1080 in Handheld Mode using upscaling technology.
The studio is considering adding dedicated graphics or performance modes in a future update.
Omega Force chose Unreal Engine 5 for the project, citing the engine's capacity for high-quality visuals and rapid iteration.
Sho acknowledged a learning curve integrating UE5 into the Warriors development workflow but praised the engine's graphical results and iteration speed, and indicated the studio may use Unreal Engine again.
The remaster was originally slated for a March launch but was delayed to October to allow additional optimization and bug fixes, primarily due to increased on-screen soldier counts and challenges reproducing legacy behavior.
Sho emphasized that the team preserved almost all original elements while adding modern conveniences, and hopes returning players will appreciate a faithful recreation with improved visuals and playability.
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered launches for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide on October 1, 2026 and will be available through the Nintendo eShop alongside other platform releases.
