The global launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday marked a major milestone for the renowned gaming giant, Nintendo.

Echoing the success of earlier hardware releases, the Switch 2 quickly made its presence felt in the UK, as reflected in the latest physical video game sales charts.

This much-anticipated release not only refreshed Nintendo’s flagship console offering but also impacted game sales trends across multiple titles and platforms. Leading the UK sales charts this week was the brand-new Mario Kart World, which debuted as the number one bestseller.

The title’s instant ascent to the top spot underscores the enduring appeal of the Mario Kart franchise and Nintendo’s proven track record of delivering compelling exclusive content for its platforms. A spokesperson for UK retail analytics commented that the initial Switch 2 sales surge, paired with key new software, has invigorated both consumer interest and retail activity.

"The launch of Switch 2, along with flagship titles, has generated significant momentum within the industry," they noted, highlighting the console’s immediate impact. Following Mario Kart World was Hogwarts Legacy, which continued to show strong multiplaform appeal.

The Switch version accounted for the highest share at 39%, but the newly released Switch 2 also comprised a significant 19% of sales, closely trailing the PlayStation 5 (21%) and PlayStation 4 (18%) versions.

Other notable entries include EA Sports FC 25, splitting sales between Nintendo Switch (34%), PS5 (28%), PS4 (25%), and Xbox platforms (13%).

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition experienced a staggering 94% of its physical sales on Switch 2, indicating significant interest in high-profile third-party titles on Nintendo’s latest hardware. The Legend of Zelda series maintained exceptional momentum, with Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild ranking fifth and seventh, respectively.

85% of each game’s sales were attributed to Switch 2, while the original Switch accounted for the remaining 15%.

Such performance underscores the franchise’s lasting resonance and the effective strategy of reintroducing acclaimed titles on new hardware. Street Fighter 6: Years 1-2 Fighters Edition also performed remarkably well, with Switch 2 responsible for an overwhelming 98% of its physical sales, significantly outpacing PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Completing the UK’s physical games top ten for the week were Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, The Last of Us Part II: Remastered, and F1 25, each maintaining steady interest among genre fans. With Switch 2 clearly energizing the UK retail charts and Nintendo’s exclusive content taking center stage, the opening week reception points to a robust cycle for both the platform holder and the broader game development ecosystem.

As confirmed by official chart data, Nintendo’s blend of hardware innovation and beloved software continues to set industry standards in the physical gaming market.
