Update (Mon 3 Aug 2026, 1:30pm): A new homebrew demo of Data East's 1988 RoboCop arcade game is now available for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.

The latest port, developed by Monster Bath Games, joins other community efforts to bring the coin-op experience to classic SEGA hardware.

Background and context

RoboCop, originally released by Data East in 1988, has been the subject of multiple homebrew efforts in recent years.

The first high-profile port work surfaced in 2022 from a coder known as Retro Encoder, who aimed to recreate the arcade game on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.

Retro Encoder released a playable demo that closely mirrors the original arcade's visuals but lacked full enemy interactivity in that build.

Since then, another homebrew port has emerged: Monster Bath Games — the studio behind Mega Splatterhouse, Deathwish Enforcers and Super Battle Princess Madelyn — has produced a separate Genesis/Mega Drive take on RoboCop and released a demo as part of its ongoing development.

Developer comments (rewritten)

The developer behind the new port acknowledged that multiple RoboCop projects were underway in the community and said they only discovered the other efforts after their own work was already well under way.

They confirmed that the creator identified as @realMonsterBath had previously produced a first-phase prototype and later contributed assets and advice to help round out the new port.

Separately, the developer behind one of the Genesis projects explained that the RoboCop build is one of three personal projects for the platform and that there is no official timeline.

They noted the demo represents an initial effort to finish the first level, that music work remains incomplete, and that they are using a shadow highlight mode to increase on-screen color — which may require a different HUD layout in the final version.

Other community activity

Retro Encoder, meanwhile, has shifted to other retro conversion work and is actively converting Sunsoft's NES Batman to the Sega Master System.

The Sega-focused community continues to share playable builds and footage: The Sega Guys recently showcased Retro Encoder's port in a playthrough video.

Availability and next steps

The Monster Bath Games demo is available now for those following homebrew Genesis development.

As with all homebrew releases, players should obtain builds through official community channels and respect copyright and distribution guidelines when exploring these ports.
