Tatsuya Kando Retires from Square Enix After 29 Years: Impact on The World Ends With You and Nintendo Platforms

Tatsuya Kando, celebrated for his influential contributions to Square Enix’s diverse catalog and specifically his groundbreaking direction of The World Ends With You, has officially retired after a distinguished 29-year career with the company.

Kando made the announcement on social media, sharing that his departure from Square Enix became effective on May 31, 2025.

Throughout nearly three decades in the gaming industry, Kando’s impact has resonated across iconic titles spanning classic and modern consoles, including the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Switch. Kando began his tenure at Square Enix as an animator, contributing to the landmark RPG Final Fantasy VII.

His versatility as a developer soon became evident as he played a crucial part across various art and animation roles for major franchises such as Kingdom Hearts and Parasite Eve.

However, his most enduring legacy lies as the director of The World Ends With You, the 2007 cult classic that made a lasting impression on Nintendo DS owners. The World Ends With You garnered critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay, contemporary urban setting, and dynamic soundtrack.

Its unique approach to storytelling, blending stylish visuals and a twist on time-loop mechanics, established it as a favorite among RPG and Nintendo fans.
