Annalynn MD brings a fresh, test-tube twist to classic falling-block puzzle gameplay with a Steam demo now available as part of the latest Steam Next Fest.

Developed by Cruise Elroy — the indie studio behind the 2021 platformer Annalynn — the new title channels 16-bit-era aesthetics while adopting a design language familiar to fans of Nintendo's Dr. Mario series.

Background and context

Dr. Mario debuted on Nintendo platforms (NES and Game Boy) in 1990 and remained a touchstone for medicine-themed puzzle games through multiple entries.

Nintendo's most recent entry in the series, the mobile Dr. Mario World developed with Line Corporation, launched in July 2019 and ceased operations on November 1, 2021.

With official support for that mobile title discontinued, players seeking new takes on the genre have largely revisited classic releases or fan projects.

Annalynn MD arrives on Steam positioning itself as a modern, independent entry that nods to that lineage.

What the demo offers

Cruise Elroy has released what the developer describes as a "pretty substantial" Steam demo.

The demo provides full access to an arcade mode and partial access to a campaign mode, and it does not include multiplayer functionality.

According to the developer's notes, the playable build available during Steam Next Fest includes seven rivals to face and 25 apothecarium effects to experiment with.

Gameplay and modes

Annalynn MD places puzzle action inside a rotating test tube.

Players rotate and manipulate the playfield in three dimensions to eliminate pathogens, echoing the pill-and-virus mechanics popularized by Dr. Mario but adding a spatial rotation mechanic.

The full game will feature more than 15 playable characters and an apothecarium system that unlocks up to 50 distinct effects intended to alter matches and create emergent strategies.

Players can tackle arcade challenges solo, compete locally or online against others in multiplayer (promised for the complete release), or take on a roguelike-esque campaign to unlock persistent modifiers.

Early impressions

Coverage from Steam Hype praised the campaign modifiers for increasing strategic depth, noting that those systems make players rethink how to approach each level.

At the same time, early impressions suggested the demo could benefit from an alternate camera or view mode to make the full 3D playfield easier to visualize.

Release roadmap

Cruise Elroy has indicated the full version of Annalynn MD is expected to launch next year; until then, the Steam demo remains available for players to wishlist and try during Steam Next Fest.

Nintendo fans on Switch and followers of Nintendo Direct or eShop announcements may find the game's retro influences and puzzle design especially appealing, even though Annalynn MD is currently a Steam-first PC release.
