Veteran ROM hacker Infidelity has made headlines in the Nintendo homebrew community with the release of his latest project: a Super Mario Bros.
port from the NES to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
Notably, this fan-made SNES version includes an innovative level editor, marking a new milestone in classic game modification.
Announced over the weekend by Infidelity, known for his previous SNES conversions of renowned titles like Metroid, Super Mario Bros.
3, and Punch-Out!!, this new project significantly expands the original Super Mario Bros.
experience.
Coinciding with the SNES port, Infidelity introduced 'Super Mario Bros.
Maker,' a custom level editor designed exclusively for the SNES platform.
This editor empowers players to redesign and customize stages, leveraging the intuitive controls of both the traditional SNES controller and the SNES Mouse peripheral.
To access the level editing features, players simply press the X button at the start of a new game.
Once inside the editor, users can select, copy, and paste 16x16 blocks from the top of the screen.
These actions are accessible through either the SNES controller in port 1 or the SNES Mouse in port 2, providing flexibility and enhanced precision for creators.
According to documentation in the project’s README file, Infidelity initially conceived the idea of a level editor in 2019/2020 as part of an NES ROM hack.
After hitting some development hurdles, he revisited the concept between July and August of this year, ultimately integrating it as part of his most recent NES-to-SNES conversion.
In a clear and concise update, Infidelity noted that enemy sprite editing is not currently available in the BETA release.
However, he confirmed this feature is planned for future updates, ensuring ongoing enhancements to the custom editor.
Players eager to modify or create new Super Mario Bros.
stages can now download both the base NES-to-SNES port and the beta version of Super Mario Bros.
Maker directly from the Internet Archive.
Infidelity’s accomplishment exemplifies the enduring passion and technical skill within the ROM hacking community, breathing new life into classic Nintendo titles.
With full compatibility for SNES hardware, including the often-overlooked SNES Mouse, this project not only preserves but meaningfully extends the legacy of Super Mario Bros.
on modern and authentic platforms alike.
