D4 Enterprise will release the original 1988 PC-88 edition of Star Cruiser on the Nintendo Switch eShop in Japan on September 19, 2024, as part of its ongoing EGGCONSOLE line of retro reissues.

The classic first-person science‑fiction action RPG was developed by Arsys Software and is notable for its early use of polygonal 3D graphics on Japanese home computers.

A brief history: Star Cruiser debuted on the NEC PC-88 in 1988 and was subsequently ported to several Japanese platforms including the PC-98, Sharp X1, Sharp X68000, and the Sega Mega Drive.

The game places players in the role of pilot Brian Light as he confronts an antagonistic military force known as VOID.

Gameplay alternates between on-foot corridor exploration, NPC interactions and item management, and vehicle-based space battles.

D4 Enterprise has stated that the EGGCONSOLE release will keep the original game intact while adding an English-language main menu and a dedicated "how to play" section.

Because the original game’s story text and dialogue are presented entirely in Japanese, the publisher cautions that the release will largely preserve the Japanese-language experience; certain interface elements and menus are already displayed in English in the emulated build to assist navigation.

Star Cruiser has never received an official international release, though Namco nearly published Masaya's Mega Drive port in North America under the title Star Quest in the early 1990s before those plans were canceled.

Fan translation projects have since produced English-language patches for the Mega Drive and X68000 versions.

The franchise also spawned a sequel, Star Cruiser II: The Odysseus Project, released in the early 1990s for PC-98 and FM Towns platforms, which continues the series' post‑VOID narrative.

D4 Enterprise's EGGCONSOLE program has regularly reissued Japanese retro titles on modern platforms, and the September 19 Switch release brings another historically significant PC‑era RPG to the eShop.

D4 Enterprise indicated additional international storefront availability is expected to follow the Japanese launch, though specific release dates for other regions have not been announced.
