Antonis Pelekanos, the solo developer behind the long-gestating 90's Arcade Racer project, has resurfaced that retro racing ethos in his upcoming action-platformer Takeover 2 through a built-in bonus: Overtake.

The inclusion ties back to a crowdfunding-backed effort that began in 2013 and later evolved into a title marketed as 90s Super GP, which had been proposed for modern platforms including Wii U, PlayStation 4 and Steam.

Background and platform history

90's Arcade Racer began life as a crowd-funded homage to 1990s arcade racers such as Daytona USA and Scud Race.

After its initial campaign, the project was rebranded as 90s Super GP and was listed for release on systems including Wii U, PS4 and Steam.

In 2019 the game's development status changed when publisher Nicalis said that Antonis Pelekanos was no longer involved and that the publisher held ownership of the property.

The 90s Super GP page remains live but the title has not been released.

Overtake: a coded nod to a stalled project

In Takeover 2, Pelekanos included Overtake as a bonus mini-game described by the developer as a high-intensity, retro-inspired racing challenge that prioritizes first place above all else.

Presented alongside another bonus titled Jet Fury, Overtake functions as a compact spiritual successor to his earlier racer work, while Jet Fury is presented as a clear tribute to Sega's After Burner arcade shooter.

What this means for Takeover 2

Takeover 2 is scheduled to launch this September.

The presence of Overtake and Jet Fury packages additional arcade-style content into the release, giving players an explicit tie to Pelekanos's long-running interest in 1990s arcade mechanics.

For Nintendo platforms and indie-focused storefronts such as the eShop, bonus modes like these often serve as attractive features in promotional runs and Nintendo Direct-style showcases.

Developer and publisher context

Pelekanos has been credited as a solo developer on the projects discussed, while Nicalis is identified as the publisher that assumed ownership of 90s Super GP in 2019.

The inclusion of Overtake in Takeover 2 represents a rare, direct reclamation of ideas that originated with the earlier, unreleased racer.

Takeover 2's September launch will be the next milestone to watch for fans of retro racing and Pelekanos's work.
