The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, developed by Too Kyo Games and published by Aniplex/XSEED Games, launched on Nintendo Switch to critical acclaim, immediately cementing itself as one of the most ambitious visual novels from directors Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi.
Released in 2024, the title distinguishes itself within the growing library of Nintendo Switch games through an astonishing narrative scope and compelling multi-branch storyline.
At its core, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy offers players an intricate journey, featuring a remarkable 100 unique endings.
This ambitious storytelling is matched by a script that reportedly spans 6 million Japanese characters, a length equivalent to approximately 60 standard paperback books.
This vast narrative was originally slated to be shorter, but as director Kazutaka Kodaka recently explained in a Denfaminicogamer interview, "Despite initial reductions, the need for new storylines ultimately caused the script to expand even further."
Voice actor Tomoyo Kurosawa, who brings to life the characters Nozomi Kirifuji and Kashimiya Karua, reflected on the complexity presented by such a sprawling script.
She highlighted the necessity of regularly consulting with directors to confirm character states and story paths before each recording session.
Kurosawa humorously pointed out that, had she received a physical script, it would have amounted to a veritable mountain of pages.
In response to concerns about the game's magnitude, Kodaka took to social media to reassure players.
He encouraged a personalized approach, stating that gamers shouldn't feel pressured to uncover every possible ending.
Instead, he suggested, "Explore the narrative freely, make the choices that resonate with you, and once you achieve a conclusion that satisfies you, let that be your ending.
If you hear about another path from a friend, you can always return and try a different route.
The key is to enjoy the journey in your own way."
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy has garnered notable praise, including a 9/10 review rating for its compelling narrative, polished strategy gameplay, distinctive art direction, and passionate voice acting.
Despite these critical successes, Too Kyo Games faces financial strains, having secured a loan to support the game's development.
At present, there are no confirmed plans to bring The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy to platforms beyond the Nintendo Switch.
With its launch, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy not only showcases the creative heights possible within interactive fiction on Nintendo Switch but also serves as a testament to Too Kyo Games’ dedication to storytelling, even amid industry challenges.
