SuperStation One Developer Unveils New Memory Card Line Compatible with Real PS1 & PS2 Hardware
The retro gaming community is abuzz after Taki Udon, renowned developer behind the open source FPGA PlayStation console SuperStation One, released the first images of a new SD-based memory card line on social media.
Known for pushing the boundaries of affordable, innovative hardware, Taki Udon’s latest project promises to enhance memory management for the original PlayStation (PS1), PlayStation 2 (PS2), and the upcoming SuperStation One system.
The new memory cards stand out for their functional design and modern features.
Drawing inspiration from the popular 8BitMods MemCard Pro line, these cards sport an on-device screen that displays memory card data and additional user options.
Unlike traditional memory cards that rely on fixed internal storage, Taki Udon’s solution leverages the reliable open source SD2PSX design, allowing users to utilize SD cards for data storage and transfer.
Notably, Taki Udon confirmed that these memory cards will be fully compatible with both original PS1 and PS2 hardware, as well as the SuperStation One console itself.
This opens up an accessible memory upgrade path for retro gamers, homebrew developers, and preservationists.
In a clear statement shared on social channels, Taki Udon indicated that the memory cards are being engineered to retail at an exceptionally affordable price point of $10.
Prototype renders reveal five vibrant color options: black, grey, transparent blue, transparent red, and purple.
However, despite community enthusiasm for potential expansions to the SuperStation One’s color lineup, Taki Udon has emphasized that producing further console color variations is unlikely, describing the process as "a significant manufacturing challenge."
Originally announced in January, the SuperStation One was offered for pre-order at $149 and is on track for release later this year.
Distinguished by its open source architecture, the console promises compatibility with PS1 titles, as well as the ability to run Sega CD and Saturn discs via its integrated optical drive dock.
This multipurpose approach exemplifies the modern resurgence of classic hardware by combining expanded functionality with cutting-edge FPGA technology.
SuperStation One and its advanced memory card solution represent Taki Udon’s commitment to meeting the needs of the retro gaming audience.
As the product moves closer to launch, its appeal continues to grow among enthusiasts seeking authentic hardware experiences bolstered by contemporary, user-friendly enhancements.
