Description

Superdeluxe Games, renowned for its collaborations in Japan's indie game scene, has officially announced a delay for the console versions of its highly anticipated shoot 'em up, Earthion.

Originally slated for a global digital release on July 31st, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, the publisher confirmed that the launch across these console platforms is now postponed to mid-September 2024. The delay affects the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox Series X|S versions, which were expected to release simultaneously worldwide via digital storefronts like the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store.

Notably, the scheduled PC/Steam release date for Earthion remains unchanged.

Fans can still look forward to the game launching on Steam for Windows PC on July 31st, as originally planned. "We deeply apologize to everyone who has been looking forward to Earthion for the delay," Superdeluxe Games stated in an official update.

The message further emphasized the publisher’s appreciation for the ongoing support and patience of their dedicated fanbase.

This announcement was jointly issued with Ancient, the studio behind Earthion, and Limited Run Games, which is managing the game's western distribution, highlighting a concerted effort across all partners to ensure a successful launch. Earthion has attracted significant attention for its lineage and developer pedigree.

Conceived by Ancient, the studio established by legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro, the game's roots stretch back to its original design for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.

Although a physical Mega Drive/Genesis release was initially planned for last year, development timelines have shifted, and the retro cartridge version is now expected to arrive in 2026. The decision to delay Earthion’s console release reflects a commitment to delivering an optimal gameplay experience across all modern platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Such strategic adjustments are not uncommon in today’s gaming landscape, especially for indie and retro-inspired projects targeting global audiences through the Nintendo eShop and other digital channels. Despite this setback for console players, anticipation remains high for Earthion's blend of modern bullet hell mechanics and classic 16-bit aesthetics.

The unchanged Steam launch ensures that PC users will be the first to experience this new entry from Ancient on July 31st, while console enthusiasts will need to wait a few extra weeks for their opportunity in mid-September. For the latest updates on Earthion, including news on release schedules and platform availability, fans are encouraged to follow official channels for Superdeluxe Games, Ancient, and Limited Run Games.
