Moonring Sequel Announced by Fable Co-Creator Dene Carter: HD2D Evolution Coming to Nintendo Switch and Steam

Following a standout debut in 2023, the retro-inspired RPG Moonring is set to receive a highly anticipated sequel.

Developed by Dene Carter, best known as the co-creator of Dungeon Keeper and Lionhead Studios’ renowned Fable series, Moonring drew attention for its compelling fusion of classic turn-based RPG and roguelike mechanics, reminiscent of Ultima’s rich traditions, and carved out a unique space on Steam and, later, Nintendo Switch.

Moonring originally launched as a free RPG in 2023 through Carter’s studio Fluttermind, immersing players in a dark-fantasy world ruled by enigmatic gods.

The game spotlighted hand-crafted exploration, vast open-world adventuring, and an ‘infinite’ supply of procedurally generated dungeons.

The central narrative placed players in the shoes of the "dreamless," travelers invited to shape their story amid mysterious gifts and secrets hidden throughout a thoughtfully constructed map.

In line with its classic inspirations, Moonring amassed a dedicated following for both its nostalgic design and innovative reimagining of genre staples.

Expressing his motivation for the project, Dene Carter previously described Moonring as a "love-letter to a style of gaming that has largely fallen out of fashion," intended to revive the magic of early RPGs for veteran fans and introduce new players to the roots of role-playing storytelling.

The game’s commitment to its heritage was further cemented with the release of Moonring DX, a paid downloadable expansion in early 2024.

Moonring DX added a massive 100-floor megadungeon and debuted on Nintendo Switch in November, broadening the game’s audience on another major platform. Unbeknownst to many, Carter began work on a sequel to Moonring at the start of 2025, officially announcing the news with a post on Steam’s events section.

According to Carter’s update, the new entry will represent a significant technical and creative leap, featuring a transition to a HD2D graphical perspective and prioritizing support for mods and community-driven content.

"I’d love for the world to be able to create their own quests and dungeons within this unique atmosphere, much as games like Mork Borg inspired offshoots," shared Carter via social media.

He also highlighted plans for "a new world, new gods, new cultures, and much more strangeness," while assuring fans that the series’ deep lore and immersive history will remain central to the experience. While Carter confirmed that, like Moonring DX, the upcoming sequel will carry a modest fee, he reassured the community that pricing would remain fair and accessible.

Fans eager for development updates are encouraged to join the developer’s Discord server. With Dene Carter’s pedigree as the creative force behind both Fable and Moonring, anticipation is high for what this next chapter could mean for classic RPG enthusiasts across Steam and Nintendo Switch.

As the Moonring sequel moves forward, it promises to celebrate the genre’s legacy while establishing a fresh standard for indie RPGs in the years ahead.
