Clear River Games and Square Enix have announced that Terranigma, the 1990s action RPG developed by Quintet, will return to modern platforms in 2027 with releases planned for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
The re-release brings one of the Super Nintendo era's most talked-about JRPGs back to digital storefronts and retail shelves after more than three decades.
Background and platform history
Originally released on the Super Famicom/SNES in Japan in 1995 and in Europe in 1996, Terranigma never received an official release in North America.
Developed by Quintet and originally published under Enix, the title has long been celebrated for its world-building, real-time action combat, hand-pixelled art and a soundtrack frequently cited among the best of the 16-bit era.
Square Enix, the company formed following Enix's 2003 merger with Square, is listed among the parties supporting the new project.
What the announcement says
Clear River Games confirmed the 2027 launch window and released an initial trailer alongside the announcement.
The studio also disclosed that celebrated manga artist Kamui Fujiwara — who designed Terranigma's characters for the original release — will contribute new key art and in-game designs, and will provide feedback during production.
Paraphrased statements from the announcement
Kamui Fujiwara expressed sincere pleasure at the title's return, noting he was involved not only with character art but also with world design and some game settings on the original project.
He said he hopes the game's core themes — including motifs of god and humanity, creation and destruction — and its atmosphere will resonate with contemporary players, and emphasized that the project aims to present Terranigma as a living work rather than a relic.
Ali Manzuri, general manager at Clear River Games, described Terranigma as a long-overlooked gem that many Western players have been unable to access.
He framed Clear River Games mission as bringing beloved but hard-to-find retro titles to modern audiences and said the studio is excited to reintroduce Terranigma to a new generation on Switch, Switch 2 and PC.
What to expect and next steps
The announcement confirms both digital and physical editions are planned, and the first trailer provides the earliest public glimpse of the re-release.
Beyond the 2027 window and the involvement of Kamui Fujiwara, Clear River Games and Square Enix have not published a full release schedule, pricing or platform-specific details for the Nintendo eShop or physical distribution.
More information, including a precise release date and platform-specific features for the Nintendo Switch family and PC, is expected from the publishers ahead of launch.
Terranigma's return is the latest example of legacy SNES-era properties being revived for modern hardware, and the 2027 release will mark the first widely available contemporary console re-release of Quintet's action RPG outside of the original 16-bit era.
Readers can watch the announcement trailer and look for subsequent updates from Clear River Games, Square Enix and Nintendo channels as the project progresses.
