Description

SegaSonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched recently on the Nintendo Switch, offering fans a new entry in the iconic racing series.

However, its debut on the current Switch hardware has drawn attention for sub-optimal performance, raising anticipation for the game’s expected release on Nintendo’s next-generation platform, the Nintendo Switch 2.

Developed by Sega, the CrossWorlds installment continues the franchise's tradition of energetic kart racing, but with its eyes set firmly on taking advantage of new hardware advancements. In a new interview with Traxion, series producer Takashi Iizuka addressed fan concerns about the staggered launch of SegaSonic Racing: CrossWorlds across platforms—including the delay of its release on the Nintendo Switch 2.

While the game is currently available on the Nintendo Switch, Iizuka made it clear that the development team required additional time to optimize the game for the capabilities of the Switch 2, due in part to the console’s later release date, now confirmed as June 5, 2025. "We always aimed for a simultaneous release across all platforms, including the Switch 2," Iizuka explained through Traxion, noting that the later hardware launch left the team with less time for necessary optimizations.

"Because Nintendo’s next system will arrive after our other platform launches, we wanted to make sure we deliver a fully optimized experience for players on the new console." Despite the delay, fans can be reassured that Sega is committed to maintaining content parity for SegaSonic Racing: CrossWorlds, regardless of platform.

Iizuka emphasized the importance of providing the same level of content and gameplay experiences across all consoles.

In support of this, he highlighted the introduction of cross-play compatibility, ensuring that players can enjoy a uniform experience whether on the original Switch, other supported consoles, or the upcoming Switch 2. "It’s vital for us that everyone enjoys the same features and content, no matter which system they play on," Iizuka stated, reinforcing Sega’s focus on inclusive, synchronized multiplayer and feature sets. While specifics regarding performance enhancements—such as support for 4K resolution or stable 60fps gameplay on the Switch 2—have not yet been fully announced, Sega’s commitment to optimization suggests that the experience will harness the strengths of the next-generation hardware.

With Nintendo Switch 2’s release scheduled for June 5, 2025, players can look forward to more details about how SegaSonic Racing: CrossWorlds will leverage the new system in the months ahead. For now, SegaSonic Racing: CrossWorlds remains available on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms via the eShop and retail, with its Switch 2 iteration poised to be a launch window highlight when the console debuts next year.
