Taito’s Classic ‘Top Speed’ Races Onto Modern Consoles via Arcade Archives

Taito’s celebrated 1987 arcade racing title, Top Speed—known as Full Throttle in Japan—is accelerating onto modern platforms starting February 5, 2026.

This classic, often cited alongside OutRun for its exhilarating gameplay and sprite-scaling visual techniques, returns courtesy of Hamster Corporation’s enduring Arcade Archives and Arcade Archives 2 preservation series. Top Speed was originally crafted by a landmark team at Taito, headed by Hiroyuki Sako, who previously shaped hits such as Operation Thunderbolt and Chase H.Q.

The arcade release is further distinguished by a dynamic soundtrack from Masahiko Takaki, part of Taito’s renowned in-house band ZUNTATA.

Takaki’s musical credits have graced legendary arcade games, including Darius, Rastan, and Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode III, cementing the composer’s status within classic gaming circles. On its 1987 release, Top Speed offered players a cutting-edge arcade experience, available in both upright and immersive sit-in cabinet formats.

The latter delivered heightened realism by physically moving in tandem with onscreen action.

A home adaptation soon followed for the Sharp X68000, extending the game’s reach beyond arcades. At the time, UK magazine Computer & Video Games lauded Top Speed as a “realistic racing game with great graphics and smooth handling,” underscoring its technical achievement in the mid-80s arcade scene.

Conversely, Commodore User magazine noted the game’s familiar formula, stating that Taito’s approach stayed close to its roots.

Today, the title retains historic significance, often regarded as a key influence on Taito’s subsequent Z-system releases, such as Chase H.Q., Night Striker, Continental Circus, and AquaJack, due to its innovative sprite-scaling technology. Players once again have the chance to experience Top Speed’s high-octane action: high-stakes, obstacle-laden street races where acceleration and skill mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Strategic use of Nitro enables explosive bursts of speed, challenging players to leave rivals behind and claim the checkered flag. Top Speed will be released across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.

Pricing differs by platform: The Arcade Archives version for Nintendo Switch and PS4 is set at $7.99, with an optional $2.99 upgrade.

The enhanced Arcade Archives 2 edition—available on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S—will retail for $9.99.

These modern releases include HI SCORE MODE, CARAVAN MODE, and ORIGINAL MODE, with online leaderboards and CRT-style visual filters.

Arcade Archives 2 introduces an exclusive TIME ATTACK MODE, expanding options for both new players and long-time fans. For gaming enthusiasts and retro revivalists alike, Top Speed’s arrival across next-gen and legacy consoles represents both a nostalgic journey and a testament to Taito’s enduring legacy in racing game history.
