James Pond Legacy, a relaunch of the long-running Pond-verse, has become the center of a dispute between publisher System 3 and contractor Antstream after the release of a trailer and accompanying artwork.
System 3 founder Mark Cale told GameSpot that Antstream handled the game's core development and supplied artwork and work-in-progress illustrations for the project, which was intended for platforms including Nintendo Switch, Steam, PS5 and Xbox and for promotional placement on storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop.
What System 3 says it was told
Cale says System 3 announced that no generative AI assets were in the game based on assurances from Antstream.
He told GameSpot that Antstream provided a written explanation in December 2025 describing an art pipeline in which original 2D concepts were processed through an algorithm to estimate volume and lighting, producing pseudo-3D drafts, and that artists then manually repainted, re-rendered and finalized illustrations.
That December 2025 statement described the final assets as fully human-authored, with algorithms used only for intermediate visualization.
Cale has said he requested that written confirmation to ensure compliance with the EU Artificial Intelligence Act.
He told GameSpot that, had Antstream disclosed the use of generative AI explicitly, System 3 would have handled announcement and trailer plans differently and would not have represented the assets as wholly human-made.
Paraphrased statements and impact
Cale conveyed that System 3 relied on Antstream's assurances and that those assurances formed the basis for representations made to platform holders such as Nintendo and Valve for Steam, as well as Sony and Microsoft for PS5 and Xbox.
He further told GameSpot the episode has made him reluctant to reference the term AI in future project communications, and that System 3 is proceeding with another title, Putty World, using hand-authored art.
Public record and outreach
GameSpot reported the exchange and said it reached out to Antstream for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
System 3 confirmed it also contacted Antstream and indicated it would update statements as new information became available.
Why this matters for platforms and publishers
The dispute underlines how contractor statements about toolchains and authorship can affect platform submissions, marketing copy and regulatory compliance for releases on Nintendo Switch, eShop, Steam, PS5 and Xbox.
For now, the factual record consists of System 3's account, the December 2025 statement provided to System 3, and the lack of a public response from Antstream.
