Nintendo Switch 2 Revision Adds User-Replaceable Batteries in Europe — Full Specs and Timeline

Nintendo has confirmed a Europe-focused hardware revision for Nintendo Switch 2 that introduces user-replaceable batteries for the console and Joy-Con 2 controllers.

The changes, announced via Nintendo's support documentation and scheduled to roll out later this year, are being implemented to comply with European Union rules on battery replaceability that take effect in mid-February 2027.

What Nintendo is changing

- Nintendo Switch 2 console: Estimated availability in autumn.

Battery capacity listed at 5172 mAh, roughly 1% smaller than the current 5220 mAh model.

Weight is approximately 411 g, about 10 g heavier than the existing version.

With Joy-Con 2 controllers attached the combined weight is about 548 g, roughly 14 g heavier than the present combined weight of 534 g.

The included Joy-Con 2 controllers will feature user-replaceable batteries.

- Joy-Con 2 pair: Expected this winter.

Battery capacity remains unchanged; each Joy-Con is approximately 2 g heavier than the current Joy-Con models (L ~68 g, R ~69 g).

- Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: Due this winter.

Battery capacity reduced to 897 mAh (about 16% smaller than the current 1070 mAh Pro Controller) and weight reduced to ~228 g, about 7 g lighter than the current 235 g model.

- Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch: Early 2027.

Battery capacity unchanged; weight approximately 234 g.

- GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2: Early 2027.

Battery capacity increased to 525 mAh (about 5% larger than the current 500 mAh), weight ~215 g.

Nintendo's distribution notes and labeling

Nintendo states the revised hardware will be distributed 'on a rolling basis' and that customers will not be able to choose which model they receive via the Nintendo Store.

Updated models will carry unique model numbers and an additional OSM code visible on packaging to help consumers distinguish revised units.

Territories and removals

Revised hardware will be sold across a list of European and nearby markets, including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and others.

Nintendo also confirmed certain legacy Switch devices and accessories will not be revised with replaceable batteries and will be removed from sale via the Nintendo Store after mid-February 2027; that list includes the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, OLED model, the older Pro Controller, and several classic controllers such as the NES and SNES controllers for Switch.

This update follows Nintendo's March announcement and a subsequent confirmation that revisions would arrive to meet EU requirements.

The details above come from Nintendo's official support pages.
