Nintendo Celebrates Super Mario’s 40th Anniversary With New Switch Online Icons and Content
Nintendo is marking Super Mario’s 40th anniversary in grand fashion.
Building on its history of creative digital offerings, the gaming giant has rolled out a new collection of Nintendo Switch Online user icons themed around the beloved Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 titles.
These exclusive icons are set to enhance gamers’ Switch profiles as the company ramps up anniversary festivities across its digital ecosystem.
The newly released icons, now live on Nintendo Switch Online, shine a spotlight on fan-favorite characters such as Mario and Rosalina.
This icon release coincides with the announcement that Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be reintroduced on Nintendo Switch next month, further energizing fans of the 3D platforming series.
Alongside Mario, a fresh wave of Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush icons has also debuted, offering further rewards for loyal players and commemorating the launch of the Donkey Kong Bananza downloadable content (DLC).
Nintendo detailed its icon rollout in a recent update.
The first wave became available on September 25, with subsequent waves arriving on October 1 and October 8.
Each icon is available for 10 Platinum Points on the Nintendo Switch Online service, while borders and backgrounds are priced at 5 Platinum Points each.
These offerings allow players to personalize profiles with imagery from some of the most celebrated Nintendo universes.
Beyond Mario and Donkey Kong, the current week also marks the conclusion of the Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition plus Star-Crossed World icon series, as previously covered by GoNintendo.
This reflects Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to keeping its ecosystem fresh and engaging with limited-time digital content.
In addition to the icons, Nintendo has released a new seven-minute overview trailer for the re-released Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, giving fans a detailed look at gameplay improvements and extra content packed into these acclaimed adventures.
The trailer showcases the platforming innovation and vibrant artistry that have made the Galaxy series a mainstay on the Nintendo Switch platform.
Notably, earlier this week, the Nintendo Music app received an update tied to Super Mario Galaxy 2, expanding its soundtrack library with 70 iconic tracks totaling over two hours of music – a boon for both superfans and casual listeners.
With these ongoing celebrations on Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo continues to leverage its eShop ecosystem to engage the global player community.
Whether through exclusive icons, expanded music selections, or high-profile game launches, Nintendo’s anniversary strategy combines nostalgia and innovation at every turn.
For those looking to collect these limited-time icons or enjoy enhanced musical offerings, now is an ideal time to revisit the worlds of Mario, Donkey Kong, and Kirby on Nintendo Switch.
