Nintendo’s acclaimed platformer Super Mario Galaxy 2 has landed on the Nintendo Switch with noteworthy updates and a subtle, yet significant, change to one of its iconic NPC interactions.
Originally released on the Wii in 2010, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has now been enhanced for the current generation, offering both longtime fans and newcomers a fresh way to experience the cosmic adventure.
A key modification in the Nintendo Switch version, now part of the bundled Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 package available on the eShop, involves a familiar Toad NPC aboard Starship Mario.
In the Wii edition, a specific Toad allowed players to deposit Starbits—a collectible currency—enabling transfers between save files.
In this new release, that Starbit Bank Toad has been replaced.
Instead, players now encounter a different Toad, whose primary role is to inform users about amiibo functionality.
Unlike the previous game on Wii, players don’t interact directly with this new Toad to use amiibo.
Instead, as per Nintendo’s revised integration for the Switch, activating amiibo support is accomplished via the game’s menu system by selecting a clearly marked icon.
This streamlines the process, ensuring it is accessible to all players.
Nintendo appears to have recalibrated the character lineup to keep the experience welcoming—shifting away from the legacy function of the Starbit transfer in favor of broader compatibility with current Nintendo hardware features.
Beyond this NPC update, Super Mario Galaxy 2’s Switch release brings several significant enhancements.
The visual presentation has been improved, supporting higher resolutions, including 4K on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Quality-of-life additions such as Assist Mode make the game more approachable for newcomers or those seeking a more relaxed playthrough.
The new Soundtrack Mode lets players enjoy the acclaimed orchestrated scores separately, while Rosalina’s storybook—a beloved narrative element from the first Super Mario Galaxy—returns, expanding the game’s story content.
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is available now for Nintendo Switch, continuing the tradition of delivering Mario’s most inventive 3D adventures to modern audiences.
The thoughtful mix of nostalgia and modernization exhibits Nintendo’s commitment to refining classic titles for today’s players while acknowledging the evolving expectations of its dedicated fanbase.
