Stellar Blade on Switch 2: technical breakdown and release update

Stellar Blade, the action title developed by Shift Up that launched on PlayStation 5 in April 2024, is headed to Nintendo's next handheld hardware in a port described as a “Complete Edition.” Recent footage and developer comments have clarified how Shift Up is approaching performance and image quality on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.

In a brief trailer shown last week, Stellar Blade appeared to run at a smooth presentation that targeted a 60 frames-per-second look.

Shift Up CTO DongKi Lee provided technical detail to Nintendo Everything about the port’s rendering pipeline.

Lee explained that the Switch 2 implementation relies on two different upscaling and frame synthesis technologies: NVIDIA’s DLSS for image upscaling and AMD’s FSR 3.1 for frame interpolation.

In his words, the team uses DLSS to upscale the rendered image, then applies FSR 3.1’s frame interpolation feature to reach a 60 fps output from a 30 fps native render.

That description indicates the Switch 2 version produces its final output through a combined workflow: native rendering at a lower frame rate, DLSS-based upscaling to improve spatial detail, and FSR 3.1 frame interpolation to generate intermediate frames and achieve a 60 fps target for display.

Shift Up has not issued an official release date for the Switch 2 edition.

Reporting around the port lists a late 2026 window as the target timeframe.

The Complete Edition is said to bundle collaboration content previously released for Stellar Blade — specifically the Nier Automata and Nikke collaboration packs — which added costumes and a boss encounter on other platforms.

The port is also reported to include support for Joy-Con 2, though the developer has not published full feature specifics or control mappings.

Stellar Blade’s Switch 2 conversion will be closely observed by players and technical analysts alike, given the hybrid approach Shift Up described.

The Combine of DLSS upscaling and FSR 3.1 frame interpolation is now confirmed by the studio; how it performs in practice on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and how that translates to input latency and perceived responsiveness will be measurable only once an official build is available for testing.

For now, fans can track official announcements from Shift Up and Nintendo for release timing, storefront listings on the eShop, and any future Nintendo Direct presentations that may show additional Switch 2 footage or technical breakdowns.
