Square Enix has signaled a renewed commitment to the tactical role-playing genre, with exciting prospects for beloved classics in the Final Fantasy Tactics series.

In a recent interview with Inverse, Kazutoyo Maehiro, director of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, confirmed the studio's openness to remastering fan-favorite entries such as Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics A2.

These titles, which originally launched on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, have remained exclusive to their original platforms, making the potential for remastered editions on current hardware particularly significant for long-time fans. Maehiro explained that Square Enix is looking closely at the performance of The Ivalice Chronicles as a barometer for the strategy RPG (SRPG) genre's market viability.

He remarked that, as both developers and enthusiasts of the genre, the team sees immense value in revisiting past works and possibly introducing new titles.

"Once you get into these games, you see how enjoyable they are, though from a broader perspective, the strategy RPG space remains somewhat niche," Maehiro stated.

"If The Ivalice Chronicles achieves commercial success, it would not just benefit fans; it would also demonstrate the business viability of the genre.

That could open the door to remasters, sequels, or even entirely new projects around Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2.

Our whole team, both veterans from the original Tactics and those on The Ivalice Chronicles, would love to see that happen." The timing of this renewed focus coincides with the highly anticipated release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, set to launch for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on September 30, 2025.

This title marks a pivotal moment for the franchise as it seeks to capture both nostalgic long-time enthusiasts and a new generation of SRPG fans on modern platforms.

Square Enix has reinforced their commitment by releasing the game's opening movie, heightening anticipation for its arrival on the Nintendo Switch eShop and physical retail channels. Final Fantasy Tactics has enjoyed a revered status in the world of tactical RPGs, with its deep strategic gameplay and immersive storytelling setting industry benchmarks since its debut.

The move to potentially remaster titles like Advance and A2 for contemporary Nintendo hardware comes at a time when tactical RPGs are experiencing renewed popularity, propelled by robust hardware sales for the Nintendo Switch family. Ultimately, Maehiro's comments affirm Square Enix's strategic approach: should The Ivalice Chronicles resonate with fans and establish strong sales, both the publisher and the development team are poised to bring even more tactical adventures—remastered classics or entirely new experiences—to platforms like the Switch and Switch 2.

For both dedicated Final Fantasy Tactics fans and genre newcomers, the future of the tactical RPG landscape looks increasingly promising.
