Square Enix has provided the first gameplay look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation running on Nintendo Switch 2 during this week’s Nintendo Direct, and confirmed a worldwide release for both retail and the Nintendo eShop on 8 April 2027.

The title is presented as the final chapter in the Final Fantasy VII remake project and will launch on Nintendo’s next-generation portable-home hybrid, the Nintendo Switch 2.

According to Square Enix’s description of the story, Cloud and his allies confront a planetary-scale threat as the climactic battle against Sephiroth arrives.

The publisher framed the narrative around catastrophic events — a meteor visible in the sky, massive planetary guardians attacking populated regions, and all-out war — which force Cloud’s group to fight not only for the planet but to close a long-running saga.

Square Enix also outlined the game’s primary gameplay pillars and modernisations for the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware:

- Planetary-scale exploration: Players will pilot the iconic airship Highwind to traverse a large, interconnected world.

The game enables aerial navigation with the option to choose drop points and skydive into varied biomes, cities, and remote frontiers.

- Fully united party roster: Revelation expands the playable ensemble to include characters such as Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine as fully playable party members.

Each companion brings distinct combat roles and abilities intended to broaden tactical options.

- Refined hybrid combat: The remake’s signature blend of real-time action and command-driven systems returns in an updated form.

Players can switch between party members on the fly, issue orders through a Tactical Mode, and chain character-specific abilities and synergies to tackle large foes.

- Deep customisation with FITS: Final Fantasy VII Revelation adds extensive build options, letting players configure weapons, armour, materia, skills and a new FITS system.

FITS introduces class-based abilities and special outfits, allowing finer tailoring of character roles and playstyles.

Square Enix’s Nintendo Direct segment included gameplay footage and screenshots illustrating these features on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will be available worldwide on 8 April 2027 via retail outlets and the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2.
