Square Enix has confirmed that the highly anticipated Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will not support an upgrade path from the Nintendo Switch to the upcoming Switch 2.
This official update came directly from the game's website, where the publisher addressed player questions about version differences and transition options via an FAQ.
The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, an ambitious reimagining of the classic RPGs, is set for release on both Nintendo Switch and the next-generation Switch 2.
The title utilizes Square Enix’s celebrated HD-2D visual style, previously showcased in other critically acclaimed remakes and RPG titles.
However, despite expectations based on evolving industry standards, the publisher stated explicitly that owners of the Switch version will not be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version, either via a free or paid route.
In a clear response on the official FAQ, Square Enix said, “No, there is no upgrade path currently available or planned.
Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on.”
This policy stands in contrast to the prevailing trend within the industry, where both free and paid upgrade paths have become increasingly standard for cross-generation releases.
Nintendo itself has released several games with enhancements for new hardware, often providing free updates for existing users or allowing at least some form of progression transfer.
The lack of a similar offering with Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake sets it apart in a way that is likely to disappoint some fans.
Further compounding the issue, Square Enix confirmed that save data and DLC bonus codes are not transferable between the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions.
Players cannot begin their adventure on the original Switch and then continue on the more advanced Switch 2 version; each platform's release is fully standalone with no cross-save compatibility.
However, bonus items linked to save data from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake are not affected by this limitation.
Physical release details provide little consolation for collectors, as the Switch 2 version will be distributed using a game-key card, not a traditional cartridge.
This decision aligns with a growing shift towards digital distribution but has been met with frustration from segments of the Nintendo community who value physical ownership.
With the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake targeting a launch in 2024, prospective buyers are urged to choose carefully which Nintendo Switch platform they wish to play the game on, as replaying or continuing progress across systems will not be an option.
To stay current with further updates—including potential changes to platform policies or future release details—fans should monitor official Square Enix and Nintendo Direct communications as the launch date approaches.
