Sega has announced a substantial update for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, bringing much-anticipated performance and visual improvements to players on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
The latest entry in Sonic’s high-octane kart racing series first debuted on the Nintendo Switch, with fans praising its gameplay but noting constraints in resolution and frame rate.
Now, the publisher has outlined significant technical upgrades and new features set to debut alongside the release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on Nintendo Switch 2.
In an official FAQ detailing the enhancements, Sega specified that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will support up to 2560x1440 resolution at 60 frames per second (fps) in both docked mode and when playing in split-screen with up to two players.
For four-player split-screen sessions in docked mode, the resolution remains at 2560x1440 but the frame rate is capped at 30fps.
Meanwhile, handheld mode will deliver smooth 1920x1080 gameplay at 60fps in single and 2-player split-screen, and 30fps when playing with four players locally.
These advancements mark a significant leap from the original Nintendo Switch version, where performance was often limited to 30fps depending on the player count.
The Switch 2 version not only doubles the frame rate in key play modes but also sharpens the visual experience with increased resolution and updated graphics, making use of the new hardware's capabilities.
Sega also confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 edition will require 16GB of storage, a notable increase reflecting the higher-quality assets and visuals.
Additionally, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will offer cross-platform matchmaking on Switch 2, ensuring that players can join friends and compete online across both Switch and Switch 2 platforms.
The physical edition, set to release on a 64GB cartridge, will include the complete base game, providing an optimized option for collectors and offline play.
The digital release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for December 4, 2025.
Current Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds owners on Nintendo Switch will be eligible for a paid upgrade pack, which Sega is offering at a 50% discount for a limited time.
With these enhancements, Sega continues its commitment to delivering polished, feature-rich experiences for the Nintendo community, leveraging the power of Switch 2 to bring Sonic and his friends’ racing adventure to new heights.
Stay tuned for further updates as the launch date approaches and players prepare to race through CrossWorlds with enhanced performance.
