Sonic Frontiers Birthday Bash DLC arrives as a free update that adds New Game+, the classic Spin Dash move, new costumes and challenges for players on Nintendo Switch and other platforms.

Developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, Sonic Frontiers originally launched on November 8, 2022 across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC; the June 2023 Birthday Bash update was announced during a Sonic Central stream and released to coincide with Sonic’s birthday celebrations.

Sega confirmed the Birthday Bash free update and detailed a follow-up, final content update scheduled for later in 2023.

The Birthday Bash update decorates the game’s open-zone Starfall Islands with party-themed visuals and introduces several gameplay additions and user-experience changes.

Key features available in the free update include New Game+, a new Spin Dash skill, additional Koco collectibles, a Frontier Elite costume, and new Action Chain Challenge content for the open zones.

Notable changes and additions (paraphrased from official patch notes):

- Birthday celebration: Starfall Islands receive party decorations and a special Sonic costume for the event.

Players can explore the themed areas through the existing open-zone structure.

- New Game+: Players can restart the story with New Game+ while carrying over stats and skills from a previous playthrough, allowing for continued progression and experimentation with build choices.

- Spin Dash: The classic Sonic Spin Dash move has been reintroduced as a new unlockable skill, offering fresh traversal and combat options across the islands.

- Action Chain Challenge: New score-based challenges have been added to the open zones so players can compete for higher Action Chain rankings.

- New Koco and cosmetics: Additional Koco variants and outfits were placed around the islands as collectible content.

Quality-of-life and balance updates were also implemented.

The update added percent-completion displays for each island, a toggle for dramatic camera angles when using skills, options to adjust jump deceleration and boost behavior, and the ability to reset clear times and ranks in Arcade mode, Cyber Space and related modes.

The patch reduced tower difficulty on Rhea Island for Easy mode and introduced colored markers in Cyber Space result screens tied to specific time-saving actions for clearer feedback.

Audio and interface updates include 24 new tracks added to the Juke Box and Sound Memories features on islands, alongside numerous bug fixes.

On Nintendo Switch, the update is available through the eShop and the game's standard update mechanism; players on PlayStation, Xbox and PC received the same free content as part of Sega's platform-wide rollout.

For players who have completed Sonic Frontiers, New Game+ provides an opportunity to revisit the Starfall Islands with retained progression.

Sega’s announcement via Sonic Central emphasized the company’s continued post-launch support and confirmed a final content drop planned later in 2023.

The Birthday Bash update represents a meaningful post-launch postscript for Sonic Frontiers, combining celebratory cosmetics with mechanical additions aimed at both casual players and completionists.

Players can download the free update now on their platform of choice and access the new features immediately through the game’s main menu and island transition screens.
