Rice Games has officially revealed that Shujinkou, their innovative dungeon-crawling role-playing game (RPG) with integrated Japanese language learning features, will launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025.
The announcement positions Shujinkou as a notable addition to the Switch’s extensive RPG catalog, combining deep JRPG gameplay with an optional educational component aimed at new and experienced language learners alike.
Shujinkou introduces players to the story of Shu, a retired samurai; Jin, a charismatic fox companion; and Kou, a resourceful princess—all united in their quest to save the realm of Genya from mysterious, language-devouring entities known as Akuma.
Rice Games has crafted a compelling narrative while blending gameplay that immerses players in both adventure and language discovery.
In an official statement, representatives from Rice Games explained that Shujinkou is “a full-fledged JRPG featuring challenging dungeons, elaborate puzzles, and turn-based combat that evolves throughout the journey.” The game further distinguishes itself with an extensive database of thousands of Japanese words, phrases, kana, kanji, and grammar points, allowing dedicated players to learn the language organically as they progress.
Importantly, the educational feature remains completely optional—players can switch to an "English-Only" mode at any time, focusing solely on the traditional RPG experience if they prefer.
Players can expect a robust set of gameplay features, including:
- Immersive, first-person dungeon exploration and challenging puzzle-solving
- Dynamic, strategic turn-based battles
- Hundreds of unique combat skills and collectible items
- A weapon and armor forging system, each item boasting distinctive text
- Fishing opportunities with a diverse array of marine species
- Over 100 side quests that expand on the lore of Genya and its inhabitants
- Six dedicated minigames hosted in the Fuu Lobby
- Additional features like an Art Gallery and Jukebox for revisiting the adventure
Shujinkou will be available as a digital download via the Nintendo eShop for $29.99.
Enthusiasts eager to secure their copy can take advantage of a pre-order discount: digital pre-orders begin on September 18, offering a 10 percent introductory price reduction ahead of launch.
With its October 2025 release date, Shujinkou is set to offer both fans of Japanese RPGs and aspiring language learners a fresh and flexible experience on Nintendo Switch.
This announcement further solidifies Rice Games’ reputation for creative genre-blending game design, and continues the Nintendo Switch platform’s tradition of innovative, educational, and engaging indie content.
