SEGA Announces Shinobi: Art of Vengeance for Nintendo Switch with Fresh Story Trailer
SEGA has officially unveiled a brand-new story trailer for its upcoming 2D action platformer, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, which is set to launch worldwide on the Nintendo Switch through the Nintendo eShop on August 29, 2025.
Developed in close partnership with acclaimed studio Lizardcube, this installment reimagines the iconic Shinobi franchise for a new audience while honoring its rich legacy.
Set in a visually distinctive universe crafted alongside Lizardcube—known for their hand-drawn artistry on titles like Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap—the game follows the saga of Joe Musashi, a revered master ninja and staple hero of the Shinobi series.
In Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, players witness Musashi returning to his homeland to discover his village reduced to ruins and his clan mysteriously petrified.
Motivation fueled by revenge launches Musashi into a high-stakes journey, where he faces formidable adversaries and oversized bosses throughout an expansively illustrated world.
SEGA has highlighted several core features that set Shinobi: Art of Vengeance apart.
Players will traverse more than a dozen meticulously designed stages, ranging from fortified military compounds to sun-scorched deserts, each teeming with intricate platforming challenges and visually arresting environments.
The combat system promises depth and excitement, enabling players to expertly wield signature ninja weapons such as the legendary Katana Oborozuki, precision-thrown Kunai, traditional Ninjutsu techniques, and powerful Ninpo arts.
According to SEGA’s latest announcement, the gameplay encourages mastery over a versatile move set, allowing for seamless combo execution and adaptive strategy.
As players progress, they can acquire Amulets to enhance their skills and uncover Ningi tools that unlock alternate paths and overcome environmental obstacles, further promoting replayability and exploration.
In a statement adapted from SEGA’s official materials, the publisher asserts that the collaboration with Lizardcube has allowed the Shinobi series to "enter a new era of hand-crafted animation and challenging gameplay," capturing both nostalgia for long-time fans and intrigue for newcomers to the genre.
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance will be released digitally via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2025.
This title reinforces SEGA’s storied commitment to high-quality action games within the Nintendo ecosystem, further enriching the Switch’s lineup of meticulously crafted platformers.
With this major release, SEGA and Lizardcube aim to rejuvenate a beloved franchise, merging modern game design principles with the time-honored spirit of Shinobi.
